there are incorrect entries, which are also duplicated, appearing on the map of our Island. How can I delete the duplicates, and correct the incorrect entries?

Could you show us an example of such a duplicated object in order to verify whether there is really duplicated data or just a rendering issue?

I have tried the potlatch edit: the duplicated entries only appear on the "view" map; when I switch to edit (potlatch2) the map changes and the entries are not on any version of the map available in potlatch 2 so I can't edit what isn't there. This is for Quadra Island, BC, Canada; the entries I want to delete read: Drew Harbour 9 (appear three times at almost full zoom) and Cape Mudge 10 (scroll south) appearing twice at almost full zoom. As we are using this map to record feral cats, these numbers already on the map make it useless for our purposes. THanks!

The OSM map data is editable, everyhwere.

  1. Create an account on http://openstreetmap.org and log in
  2. Pan and zoom the map to the location where you want to change data. Zoom as close as possible
  3. Choose "Edit" (or your local translation, second entry after "map") and then "Potlatch 2" to edit the map data.

Ther are more advanced editors once you are more experienced, but Potlatch works well to remove duplicates or correct incorrect values.

I found two polygons called Drew Harbour 9 there are probably three which is why the name appears once in the middle of each polygon. Is the triple naming a big problem? the mapper as decided to map the polygons separately. You could contact him. I or someone will paste a link to Q AND A of how you can do that. alt text

Thanks so much, Andy!! After a lot of clicking I see what you have found. Yes, it is the boundaries of one of our local native reservations with, assumbly, their number system, so I will not interfere with that information. Thanks so much for your time. I have been asked to use this map for a local application (mapping feral cat colonies), in order to receive grant money to fix those cats. Right now, after several hours of my volunteer time eaten up, I have other suggestions for the cats.....:) :) :) But I find the Open Street Map intriguing and will play with it on my own. Now we can map and trap those cats to our hearts content! Thanks again! Quadra Cat Mapper

One thing that I notice is that the "Cape Mudge 10" name that appears here on the standard map doesn't appear on the Mapquest Open version, so that may be a quick and dirty way of getting a background to display cat numbers against.

To check between different maps go to the layer selector at the top right, and choose the layer that you want to see.
