I'm very new at this game. I downloaded the Australian map via google chrome and extracted the _gmapsupp.zip file to my GPS. However the GPS does not seem to recognize this file at all. What have I done wrong?

(Addition 20 Jan 2013:) I downloaded the _gmapsupp.zip file from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ website again this time with IE instead of Google chrome and extracted the file to the maps directory on my Garmin3790. Now the maps(of Australia)are available on my GPs but there are large chunks of the map missing, replaced with blank green areas. Help!!

Gerry51, welcome! You provide very, very few information to enable others to help you. Which GPS exactly? Where (URL) did you download the "_gmapsupp.zip" (there are many, many pre-made maps for Garmin devices)? Did you try other maps before? Did they work? Did you copy the map to the right directory of the Garmin device? Please also have a look at other (already answered questions) via the search function or at e.g. all questions tagged with "garmin".

(apologies if this is a silly question but) did you extract the gmapsupp.img file out of the zip file and stick it in the "Garmin" directory of an SD card of the GPS (that's the process for the most common ones out there - newer ones may vary)

Although this is a link to GB maps the loading instructions will apply. They are an excellent description of procedure and solutions to any problems you may encounter. http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm

Where there are "large chunks of the map missing" would it be possible to post a permalink using the main OSM web site to the area concerned?

That might help us to see whether it's an issue with data actually not being in OSM in the first place, or perhaps one of the rectangles that make up Australia on http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ missing, or perhaps a map style problem that's causing something in green to be rendered over useful data?

Hi Gerry51,

I had the same problem with my Nuvi 3790 when adding those maps to the SD card under the Garmin folder.

I solved the issue by storing the maps on the SD card under a folder named MAP (with no S). The MAP folder should be at the root on the SD card. On the Nuvi 3790 I was able to simultaneously store several maps in the MAP folder as long as the files end with .img

Cheers

With any GPS or Sat Nav connected to the PC you may be able see what file structure and file and folder names the device uses and see whats been stored, and where. Also a good idea to store a back up.
