I am working on a barrier island. The coastline that I am starting with is not even close. However, before I redraw it I would like to get any guidelines that might apply. Here are a couple of specific questions: 1)The back of the island (away from the ocean) has a substantial amount of tidal marsh. Other maps of this island seem to show this wetland area as part of the island. The current "coastline" is drawn (very roughly) around what is always dry land. (The source for the current coastline is identified as PGS I believe). Without any other guideline I plan to redraw the line so that the wetland is enclosed within the island. Is this the way to do it? A related question is that I would like to identify this area on the map as "natural=wetland" and then be able to label it so it shows on the map. The most appropriate label would be "Tidal Marsh". Any way to do this? 2) What about the beach side? Without any guidelines I plan to draw the line roughly along a line where the ocean is at the time the satellite images were taken. Naturally, this line shifts significantly from low to high tide. What is the best practice for this situation? asked 19 Dec '10, 16:36 discus277 |
1.) I'd say that including the wetland in the island is ok. Tag it as natural=wetland and either wetland=saltmarsh or wetland=tidalflat. See http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Wetland about wetland tagging. 2.) The coastline should ideally be at the average high tide line. If the aerial imagery is really good you might be able to spot the high tide line. If not map your best estimate. Openstreetmap is wikistyle and data can be improved gradually. |
