I need to design self guided walking maps that will have specific points of interest along the way. These maps will be downloaded after purchase, the maps must be kept private until purchased online. Is this the correct website to help me do this?

If you want to use OSM data or derived maps for commercial purposes I personally recommend that you start studying the OSM wiki before, because there are descriptions of all steps if you want to use OSM data in that way.

So please do a part of the efforts on your own and tell us when you get stuck somewhere.
