You can upload GPS traces directly to OpenStreetMap in .gpx format. Over time these can be useful in identifying streets that are not present on the satellite imagery (e.g. because they're new) or when the imagery is inaccurate in other ways.

It seems that the area you're looking to help with has good satellite coverage but has a lot of untraced roads so you can help in that way as well.

A quick look at the map http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=25.4027&lon=68.3672&zoom=13&layers=M tells me that while a couple of streets have been traced from aerial imagery, Hyderabad lacks a lot of detail, especially street names. So even without a GPS, if you simply printed out a map for a city quarter and walked around and wrote down the street names, for later addition to the OSM database, that would be a huge improvement to the map!

Field papers (http://fieldpapers.org/) seems quite good for this. It gives you a nice PDF you can just print off rather than having to worry about exporting the data and formatting it for print. It also has an interface for uploading data back to OpenStreetMap.

... and if you need some more information on how to get involved in map editing at all, see the http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide
