How would I go about finding the area of a way? It doesn't matter if it's in acres, metres^2, or whatever as I can always convert.

You can do this using JOSM with the Measurement plugin. Load the plugin, and it will add an icon to the left-hand toolbar, with a picture of a ruler. If you click on that it will open the measurement window.

Then select a closed way you are interested in, and it will give you the area in m².
