Does anyone know of a simple program to add contour lines to OSM data as a basemap for viewing in Garmin Basecamp, which could then be transferred to a handheld GPS unit? I'm basically looking for this service with topography: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

You can also ask at the OSM forum http://forum.openstreetmap.org/ ... they have a subforum about Garmin maps.

If you have windows, you can try my batch script which is based on mkgmap: http://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/osm_combi

It can combine tiles from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl and contours from sites like http://osm.thkukuk.de/

Thanks, will pursue this further. If I need contours from areas other than Europe, which tools can I use to create a file to combine using mkgmap?

Thanks for this reply, it's just really helped me solve the same issue

tk-osm.thkukuk.de has also USA contourlines, for other areas you can make contour lines yourself with Phyghtmap
