I'm trying to install a downloaded openstreetmap on my Garmin nüvi 1340. I put the gmapsupp.img in the folder called 'Garmin'. However, when I boot the Garmin device nothing is changed and the new map is not visible. Also not under Settings > Map > Info. Any ideas what to do?

All your steps outlined seem OK, and would normally reveal the new map. So the error may be in the download, give details of the download you used such as where and when, Maybe somebody will have used it and can confirm it's quality. If so did you unzip it before putting in the garmin folder?

A short googling gave this helpful looking result.
Maybe it also helps to name the file on the SD-card/Garmin gmapsup1.img or gmapsup2.img instead of gmapsupp.img

Edit: Right now it sprang to my mind that this answer could help you, too.

How did you create gmapsupp.img, ie convert it from a downloaded OSM .map to a Garmin .img file. The nuvi error should not normally happen when you use Mapsettoolkit to create an IMG file that can be loaded into Mapsource and then use the latter software to transfer it as a gmapsupp.img to the GPS in the manner you described.
