The current picture of the week in the OpenStreetMap wiki shows that Apple is possibly using OpenStreetMap data in iOS maps.

  1. Is this true?

  2. Do they have to display a attribution according to the new license?

  1. The picture of the week would suggest so. The data is almost identical.
  2. They are attributing OSM; see their credits screen.

It is worth stressing out that they are not using OSM everywhere but only in select locations. They use a mashup of many data sources. It is often hard to identify which source is used where.

It seems that OSM data they use is quite old: I see the same errors than on the map used in iPhoto for iOS, which was reported as using data back from April 2010. Part of the reason for using data so old was apparently to avoid licensing issues. To bad, because most of these errors are corrected in more recent versions of OSM.

I'd love to see a source for a statement such as "Part of the reason for using data so old was apparently to avoid licensing issues".

Also, can you point to an area where you "see the same errors (as) on the map used in iPhoto for iOS"?

I cannot find a source supporting that statement regarding old data, so it might not be accurate. I was not sure it was actually true, I should have checked, mea culpa. Still, it is rather curious that they would not use more up-to-date data.

One area where I can see those errors is my home town, Montreal. Many neigborhoods and places are misspelled the same way in both maps (Petit[e] Bourgogne, Point[e]-Saint-Charles, La Fondain[e] Park, Collège Jean Brébe[a]uf). You can access iPhoto map here: http://www.refnum.com/tmp/apple.html

Regarding the old iPhoto data Apple did not know the real source of it. The same dataset have appeard different places and it is possible someone is selling OSM @ April 2010 without attribution.

The license of the April 2010 planet dump is the same as the April 2012 so it have nothing to do with the license.
