When visiting openstreetmap.org with Firefox on my Android phone, it looks different than on the desktop. So I assume there is a special mobile variant. It looks like this:

Screenshot of osm.org on Firefox Mobile

The left bar with the search box is not shown. Also I can't scroll the page as this only scrolls the map area. How can I search for an address on this page?

Update: No search bar in landscape mode either, even though it is 1280 pixel wide. Also the Firefox option to request the desktop variant doesn't change anything. Screenshot in landscape mode

For info, that's a 720 x 1280 image.

If you want to search a place, you may open directly nominatim webpage or use an application dedicated for your smartphone like OsmAnd.

"nominatim.openstreetmap.org" nearly works (you can search, but it's a bit fiddly). Also for some reason** touch events are handled by the map on the main OSM page, but with the Nominatim page he browser handles them.

** lots of hard work and testing in the page design, probably.

The Nominatim page solves my immediate problem. Although the map on the result page is unusable, I can click on details of the search result, then on the OSM object and then to show the object on a bigger map.

OsmAnd is great and I use it already, but you have to have downloaded the area already. I was looking for the casual search when on the road.

It's the same page, but on small-screen devices the search box is omitted to fit more map on.

One possibility - does your phone browser change to landscape mode if you flip it sideways? If so, try that - on a 1024 x 600 tablet that I have the page shows the stuff at the left in landscape mode, but not portrait.

That might work, but the OP still has a valid point. How about puting the sidebar into one of the tabs when displaying on a narrow viewport ? Put a 'more' tab beside 'export', or even replace 'export' with it (since the export feature is likely not usefull on a smartphone). That way no functionality is lost, and space is retained.
