Why not ask your question on the new OpenStreetMap Community Forum?

Disclaimer: this is a beginner's question.

I thought about using building=scrapyard or landuse=scrapyard. But are these actually called scrapyards? (I'm not a native speaker, sorry.)

These are not really buildings, so the building tag would be incorrect. There is however a amenity=waste_disposal tag you can use. A single node should be sufficient.

Thank you, I did so. However, the nodes don't seem to appear on the main map. You can see that here, for instance: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=59.869098&lon=30.414825&zoom=18&layers=M Is there something I miss?

and this node amenity=recycling shows here http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=52.331144&lon=-0.180256&zoom=18&layers=M probably just wait for your edits to get rendered

Also note that not every feature gets rendered on the main map.
