I have heard I can download maps to gps device on this website, how do I do that? because I have looked on the website and can find no download buttons to do that. I have a Garmin etrex Legend HCx and a blank 4gb sdhc memory card.

First you have to keep in mind that OpenStreetMap is mainly about collecting geospatial data and not about creating maps for third-party devices. However, there are multiple non-official projects/users creating such maps from OSM's geospatial data, including maps for most Garmin devices.

Our wiki has a long list about different ready-made Garmin maps. These maps differ in their features, especially the geographic area they cover, if they are routable or not and what main type of transportation they are made for.

For my general purpose use, I've found the files from Lambertus at http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ to be really easy to work with, and you can get a custom set of tiles generated usually within a day.

If you want GB maps for that Garmin I would use these http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm the maps are built with OSM data into a Garmin file as that is the only type of map file your device can display, they are free by the way I have used TT maps for a couple or years they are great. For other areas this contributor also creates map files http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Lambertus
