Both the 72 and ETrex uses a 4 pin connector that connects to a serial com port. The serial com ports are 9 pin and are never used for display. That probably is your 15 pin VGA port (those two are often mistaken for each other).

Even if you connect the gps through a usb-serial converter you would need a program to comunicate with the GPS. You can use Garmin MapSource or GpsBabel.

First of all, I'm assuming that you have the right hardware: an eTrex-to-serial lead, and then a serial-to-USB converter.

You will then need both a driver for the serial-to-USB converter, and software to download the GPS track. For the driver, you'll find that most such converters are based on the Prolific PL-2303 chipset. Drivers for this are available from prolific.com.tw and indeed from many other sites around the Internet. (Some Linux distributions may come with a built-in driver.)

To download the GPS track, the most commonly used software is GPSBabel. Ready-made downloads are available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Be sure to save in GPX format, which is what openstreetmap.org requires.
