Hi, basically the title says it all. Downloaded a few OSM-using apps (NavFree and OsmAnd) to my Android. Saw some flaws in the maps, knowing the area, and corrected them (roundabouts, connections missing, etc.). Although they show up on the MapNik map and the edit-map on OSM.org, when would they be available for the users to download on their devices? Is there a fixed frequency (f.e. every 2 / 4 weeks, 2 months, ...)? My current maps on the Android give a date of 19-07-2012 and others 26-06-2012. |

You have to realize two differences here: The newest raw OSM data can be obtained from the central OSM server every minute via the so called minutely-diffs. To get this, you have to do a download of the core data set that can be some days or weeks old, and then apply all the diff files that are offered with a special program The other thing is how to get most recent data for your app that uses map files based on OSM For Osmand it needs about twoo weeks when the Osmand guys start a new processing of map generation for the whole planet. That might be the reason why they have regular updates only once in a month or similar. Best way for you: Download the most recent raw OSM data from geofabrik.de for your area and create a map for Osmand with the bundled MapCreator that runs on any desktop PC with Java. I thought the OsmAnd-app was looking directly at OSM-servers to download the maps, so I asked the question here. Did not realize that OsmAnd is using sub-sets of the full-data-set that they extract themselves after a certain time-interval. Thanks a lot.

Previous answers are from a couple of years ago. As of late 2014, OsmAnd generates new maps three times a month on or shortly after the 1st, 10th and 20th of each month. Sometimes there are errors in map generation that affect things. And it takes a couple of days for all maps for the world to be generated. So the map for your area may not be available until a few days after the 1st, 10th or 20th.

As I understand it apps should not get the data directly from OSM as this would over load OSM servers. Ideally other servers will get data from OSM periodically (time varies). This data is then used by the app and not OSM directly. Occasionally an app is written to directly access OSM which will, if it overloads OSM it will get blocked. The result of this is the map on the app will always have data a week or so or more older than the current data base.

Thanks, however I did not mean a direct continuous access of the app to OSM to see if a new map is already available. I only wanted to know the frequency with which OSM puts the new dataset (map) available for (manual induced) download. Like in my example, my Spanish map (on OsmAnd) gives me a date of 18-07-2012. If I know (and other users too I suppose) that OSM will release a new (updated) map every month (f.e.), I will not have to look for a new version until mid/end of august 2012.
