Why not ask your question on the new OpenStreetMap Community Forum?

Ive downloaded a osm file but I cant open it anywhere. I exported it into GPX format out of the export page, but got it as an .osm file which wont open... what is wrong?

What are you actually trying to do? Presumably you're trying to export some data from OSM in order to do something with it (perhaps display it in some program, or create a map from it, or load it onto a handheld device)? If you told us what that was we may be able to help.

The Export function doesn't support GPX format files, nor would it make any sense to do so.

Could you perhaps explain what you did, or saw, that led you to believe that you would be getting a GPX file?
