I would like to create my own OSM files to use locally. I need to take 3rd party shapefiles and combine them with existing .osm extracts from geofabrik. I will not be contributing/uploading what I make back to OSM (will use them for my own purposes). Can someone give me some pointers on how to do this. I don't have any experience with OSM editing tools. In other words I need to: 1. Take a 3rd party shapefile (say of a park) and prepare it for OSM, i.e. correct fields/attributes 2. Convert the shapefile to .osm file 3. Merge new .osm file with existing extract from geofabrik, i.e. Denmark

The final product will be a new .osm file with a new park in Denmark.

Can anyone please point me to some tools and methodology for doing this?

Thanks!

Some hints about dealing with shapefiles an OSM data are collected in the OSM wiki at Shapefiles.

Beside that, read the OSM wiki in general to get familiar with OSM structures. Things get easier then.
