How can I align existing buildings to nearby streets and buildings in a common editor like josm or potlatch?

This is the way I do it in JOSM:

  • Select the building
  • Press and hold the Ctrl key
  • Select two nodes from a street or whatever you want align to
  • Release the Ctrl key
  • Press Q or select Orthogonalize Shape in the Tools menu

That works for buildings with right angles. The building will be orthogonalized at the same time if you haven't done that before.

Summary:

  • Select an object and two nodes and press Q

Won't this sometimes move the nodes that are part of the street though?

@zellfaze: No, I just tried it myself and the two nodes you select don't get moved, just the selected way.
