The problem is still there, some news?

All of the answers below are still accurate. It might be worth looking at the yevaud load graph - European night-time sounds like the time to try.

Or you could try some of the alternatives that Harry Wood suggested.

Server does not produce PDFs and other export formats if the load on the server is above 25. The current load can be viewed here: http://munin.openstreetmap.org/openstreetmap/yevaud.openstreetmap/load.html

Hardware recently upgraded, as of 14th May 2011 the server is below 25 load at least 95% of the time.

As of 2014 the situation is far gloomier - it's constantly way, way above 25 except for a few hours during European night time. That "try again in a few minutes" message is very misleading.

The error says "The load average on the server is too high at the moment. Please wait a few minutes before trying again." So I suggests that you wait a few minutes and try again because the server is overloaded at the moment.

Yes I do but every time it is! does it give a trick to avoid it?

The export tab will give an error if the server is overloaded, but it also struggles if you are requesting an area which is too large (or full of too much complex map data).

Some alternative tools/approach may help you see the OSM on paper wiki page
