I have a commercial closed source application and we were thinking of using OpenStreetMaps as an alternative to Google Maps. Can I use open street maps without making my application open source?

Yes, you can use OSM without making your application open source. Type "commercial" in the search box above to find a number of answers relevant for your use case.
