It seems to me that most of the api providers listed here are unreliable - they are either too busy, or does not work at 24/7. Can I install something on my pc to make it XAPI provider? I don't need write access or full-blown OSM server, just read-only implementation with filtering and finding stuff capabilities. It will be used by several different services that I'm developing.

I suppose I can obtain a copy of a planet dump. What software do I need besides that? I'm in a Linux environment.

I suppose I can filter what I need with osmosis and work with the exported files, but I prefer to have a reliable and fast XAPI.

According to the wiki page the XAPI source code is located here but the site seems currently offline.

Maybe you would like to install/use Overpass API instead of the older XAPI? If so, have a look at the install guide.

I've been told it's quite simple but haven't tried on my own since I don't need one. (For running and providing I also have to little bandwidth.)

+1 not too complicate to install on linux and much faster than the jxapi implementation (a few differences in some calls though)
