Hi,

is it possible to use OSM to create paid navigation? Can we draw on maps freely?

Update:
I've seen paid apps using OSM in navigation, but it doesn't mean that is for free. So my question is do I have to obtain special licence while using OSM for navigation purpose (I saw maps that could be used for free as maps but cannot for navigation)?

And second question is navigation limited somehow (i.e. we cannot use 3d or sth)? I guess we can draw lines on the maps.

It would help if you explained what you actually want to do in more detail. The answer to the first part is "yes, it is possible", but the answer to the second part of the question depends on what you mean by "maps" and "freely". You're probably making a whole bunch of assumptions about OSM as a project and while some of them may be true, not all of them will be.

This FAQ site has a search function at the top of the starting page.

Try to search for the word "commercial"

Or go to any software source like Apple AppStore or GooglePlay and search for OSM or Openstreetmap. Thus you can see some examples for commercial apps that are using OSM data, also with routing features.

Also, go to the OSM wiki and take about two hours time, and read especially the pages about Tile usage policy, Legal FAQ, Planet.osm, software, Routing etc.

I looked there and I haven't found clear answer is it possible for navigation.

Please - go back and read those links again. Lots of non-clear-cut legal issues are discussed there (including "can OSM data be distributed legally via Apple's App Store"). Depending on what you want to do, the answer probably won't be a simple "yes" or "no".

The OpenStreetMap license:

  • Does not place any additional restrictions on commercial use - the same conditions apply to everybody
  • Does not discriminate between different uses - the same conditions apply to navigation, rendered maps, or whatever

The share-alike and attribution requirements always apply. You cannot opt out of these by payment or by any other method.

As SomeoneElse and stephan75 have said, you should read the various information on the wiki and, in particular, the text of the license itself (currently CC-BY-SA 2.0, but to change imminently to the Open Database License).
