How do I tag a village so that the name of the village appears on the map in an appropriate place - ie in a bit of empty space close to the village centre? Is there a protocol for doing this in rural areas where the village is a spread out parish, but it is useful to locate the centre eg where the pub is?

If you tag the village as a node, you are free to decide where to place the node. However, the wiki suggests that the position of the node "should be somewhere judged to be central to the place. This is not necessarily the geometrical centre, but central in terms of transport routes / city density".

There is no direct way to specify where the name should be rendered, this is the decision of the renderer. Using a node, the name will usually show up at the node's position or somewhere in the near surrounding. If you map the village as an area (which is more exact but also more complicated) you can't decide at all where the name will be shown on the map. But as rendering isn't your job and one shouldn't map or tag for the renderer anyway, just stick to the suggestion of the wiki.

Many thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I'm new to this, but it seems to me that if I ask the things I don't understand it will help create easy-to-find answers for others like me - and result in better mapping! Cheers.
