I know I can subscribe to all blogs via e.g.:

http://blogs.openstreetmap.org/rss20.xml

However I want only want to be notified about English ones.

How, if possible could it be configured to my preferred language?

Update: I notice one can get list of recent OSM diary entries, such as in German: http://www.openstreetmap.org/diary/de

However no obvious way to get an RSS feed on it :(

I don't think it's possible for blogs.osm.org; at least, I've not seen such a set up with the Planet feed reader (which is used there). For the English diary entries, however, there is openstreetmap.org/diary/en/rss.

For other languages substitute the 'en' for the language of your choice. e.g. for Russian. http://www.openstreetmap.org/diary/ru/rss

Mapping others languages to the two character code is left as an exercise for the reader :)
