How the main road should be marked? What is the current usage? I do not want o mark individual road signs. I am looking for way to mark main road so that it can be used by navigational systems fo derive individual priorities. Main road is usually marked with these signs:

this sign or this sign

quite often small diagram like this

like this

is added to the sign of to the Yield sign. Please note that I am:

  1. NOT asking to tag individual signs as this is not helpful to navigational applications at all.
  2. It is not true that it can be derived from the class of the road (primary, secondary etc) - althought it can often coincide, these are two different information - one is about road network importance and the second is about yield rules on particular crossing.

I have found a proposoal which adresses exactly what I am asking for:

However it is just a proposal.

PS: It is quite strange that there is no solution to this problem yet - it seems to be in a draft stage.

It's probably not answered because it's not really wanted. Even commercial navigation systems don't care about priorities or traffic lights, probably because their impact is hard to estimate (depends on local circumstances). And navi devices don't exempt drivers to watch the trafic and road signs at intersections !

See highway=* in the wiki.

Can you be more specific? The only thing i found there is the possibility to mark the give-a-way sign, which is not what this question is about ...

The higher priority road should have the higher priority road level. Though it sounds like that's not really what you want, what you really want is to mark where a yield (aka give way) sign is. Your question's vague, so you got a similarly vague answer.

@Paul Johnson Can you please help me to make the question less vague? English is not my mother tongue. I have very clear question in mind, but perhaps I am not able to express it. What is vague about it?

While it is possible to add road signs as points to the map, most of the time it does not make a lot of sense. There is a tagging suggestion here for road priority, however it has only been used 2000 times which is a very small number for all of OSM.

You -should- tag the main road appropriately (primary, secondary, tertiary and so one) according to the rules in use in the area you are mapping in. These can vary slightly from country to country and it is best to consult the wiki on local practice.

is not this meant only for roads that are explicitely marked as priority from point A to point B? I am more interested in marking individual crossings - I agree that while it is possible to mark individual road signs that it is not necessary. The thing I am looking for is to mark the priorty on individual crossings so that it can be used by navigational systems.

I wouldn't stop you from proposing such a scheme, even though I'm not convinced that is is necessary: a hypothetical router that would take priority roads in to account, could deduce the priority situation at crossings from the road priority.

Sorry your comment is not very logical. My question is "how to mark road priority" and I say that I do not want to mark individual priorities. And your answer is - it can be deduced from road priority. But it goes in cycle to original question: how to mark road priority?

(02 May '13, 16:24) gorn

@SimonPoole Sorry but this does not answer the questions. There is no guaranteed relation between the priority (especially in cities) on crossing and primary/secondary/ etc. I have updated the question text.

@gorn I already gave you the correct answer over 14 months ago (again see ) ... PLEASE let this question die at last
