A simple get with: wget http://www.informationfreeway.org/api/0.6/map?bbox=... (etc) persistently fails for the last week with "error 503 service unavailable". Is this something I'm doing wrong, or is the service really unavailable?

The 'historic' XAPI (which you've referenced in the URL above) is no longer a supported service. You should use an alternative as listed on the wiki, such as JXAPI.

Hi, thanks for your response. Sorry to be a noob, but where do I go for up to date info? Is http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Platform_Status just untrue?

It was just out of date. It's been fixed now.
