Hi I'm from a residents group in Herne Hill, London. We want to create a map that includes local shops and facilities. A large version will go on a public wall or noticeboard. Ideally a local artist will hand draw some of the roads and some landmarks as a base layer. We have a budget but its not that large!

OpenStreetMap is one option but is it the right one for us and what are the pros and cons? Do you know of somewhere that's already done what we want to achieve so we don't have to reinvent the wheel? So far we have: Pros are that: It's there for ever; Can edit; Shops and the community can input own data; Free Cons are: Printing will need coding and work to make it beautiful With thanks Michael Herne Hill Forum

You might want to have a look at the tools on the Wiki page OSM on Paper. It has a listing of tools for generating paper maps from OSM data. MapOSMatic and Townguide look like they may be good places to start with what you want to do.

Beyond that, there are a bunch of other tools that may help you get the OSM data in a graphic format (rendered). There's a list of them on the Wiki page Rendering. From a quick look, mapgen.pl and its successor MapWeaver look very interesting.
