I was drawing in some areas that already had shared sides, such as a field that I wish to tag, bounded by a river and road I drew a line parallel but it differcult along a meandering stream especially if it as a bank footpath. Any ideas when using Potlatch2 |

You can use the "Follow" feature in Potlatch 2 to help with drawing things with shared ways. As exaplained by Steve Bennet in this post on the 'Talk' mailing list, this is how to use it:

Sharing nodes with ways or polygons is a nightmare to edit later so i avoid it and use the parallel tool ( Potlatch2 )

If i needed to map a polygon now, I would avoid using shared nodes by using the parallel line tool from the Potlatch2 toolbox. So create a parallel line for each section then join and trim them, ctrl click each section to select them all to make one polygon then pick the area type of choice. name it, source note it and save it. job done. |
This sounds like you might want to use multipolygons instead of parallel boundaries: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation:multipolygon Multipolygons let you build areas out of other way segments by sharing them using relations.
However, someone has to tell us how to do that in Potlach2 since I'm using JOSM myself.
